Peter Kosmala, CIPP
Peter is a recognized thought leader in digital media and data privacy as a former marketer, technologist, lobbyist and association leader and as a current educator, adviser and speaker.
Peter served many years with the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) as Assistant Director and as Vice President. He led the creation of the first professional credential in data privacy, the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) and four additional credentials that address privacy in technology (CIPT) as well as privacy laws, standards and operations in Canada (CIPP/C), Europe (CIPP/E) and across Asia (CIPP/A).
Peter has held leadership roles at technology companies CMGI and dataxu (now ROKU), trade associations the 4As and the NAI and the self-regulatory organization, DAA(US). He has contributed to working groups and standards bodies that include The Trustworthy Accountability Group (TAG), Stop Patent Abuse Now (SPAN) and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
Peter’s roots are in advertising as a senior executive at agencies, Wells Rich Greene BDDP and MVBMS Partners/EURO RSCG (Havas).
Since 2020, Peter has led course development for the post-graduate program in information privacy at York University in Toronto where he teaches two of the three courses in the program. He was nominated for Educator of the Year (“Privacy Leader: Academia/Thought Leadership”) at the inaugural 2024 PICCASO-Canada Privacy Awards.
